Ingredients

1 pound ziti pasta

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 small onion, finely chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

1 jar (24 ounces) marinara sauce

1 cup ricotta cheese

1 cup heavy cream

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Salt and pepper, to taste

Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Cook the Pasta: In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the ziti according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Prepare the Meat Sauce: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil. Once hot, sauté the chopped onion for about 3-4 minutes until it becomes translucent. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute, stirring frequently.

Brown the Meat: Add the ground beef or Italian sausage to the skillet, breaking it up with a spatula. Cook until browned and cooked through, approximately 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Spice it Up: Stir in the Italian seasoning and marinara sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Let the mixture simmer for about 5 minutes to meld the flavors.

Make it Creamy: In a mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese and heavy cream. Mix well until smooth and creamy.

Combine Ingredients: In a large baking dish, combine the cooked ziti, the creamy ricotta mixture, and the meat sauce. Gently fold in 1 cup of the shredded mozzarella and ½ cup of the grated Parmesan cheese. Mix until well combined.

Assemble the Dish: Spread the ziti mixture evenly in the baking dish. Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on top.

Bake: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the ziti for 25-30 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven, let it cool for a few minutes, and garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired. Serve warm and enjoy the delicious layers of creamy, cheesy goodness!
