Ingredients

For the Topping:

1/2 cup unsalted butter

1 cup packed brown sugar

1 cup pecans, chopped

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Cake:

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup buttermilk

3 large eggs

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Prepare the Topping: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a medium saucepan, melt the 1/2 cup of unsalted butter over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar and cook, stirring constantly, until bubbly. Remove from heat and add the vanilla extract. Pour the mixture evenly into the bottom of a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Sprinkle the chopped pecans over the butter-sugar mixture.

Make the Cake Batter: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.

Combine Dry Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry mixture to the creamed mixture, alternating with the buttermilk, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined; do not overmix.

Assemble the Cake: Carefully pour the cake batter over the pecan topping in the baking dish. Spread it evenly using a spatula.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for about 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Cool and Serve: Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes. Then, using a plate larger than the baking dish, carefully invert the cake onto the plate, allowing the pecan topping to grace the top of the cake.

Slice and Enjoy: Allow the cake to cool completely before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature, with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream if desired.
