Slow Cooker Apple Butter – Fall in a Jar!

10 medium-sized apples (a mix of sweet and tart varieties like Fuji and Granny Smith)

1 cup brown sugar (packed)

1 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon allspice

1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Juice of 1 lemon (about 2 tablespoons)

Pinch of salt

Optional: 1/2 cup apple cider for extra depth of flavor (or substitute water)

Prepare the Apples: Peel, core, and chop the apples into small chunks. There's no need for uniformity; rustic pieces add charm to the apple butter.

    Combine Ingredients: In the slow cooker, add the chopped apples along with the brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cloves, vanilla extract, lemon juice, and salt. If using, pour in the apple cider or water.

      Mix: Stir the ingredients together until the apples are well coated with the sugars and spices.

        Cooking Time: Cover the slow cooker with the lid and set it to low heat. Allow it to cook for 8-10 hours. If you’re short on time, you can cook it on high for 4-6 hours, but low heat is preferable for better flavor development.

          Stir Occasionally: If you can, give it a stir every couple of hours to ensure even cooking. Watch the apples gradually break down and meld together into a thick sauce.

            Blend: Once the cooking time is up and the apples have softened completely, use an immersion blender to puree the mixture until it reaches your desired smoothness. Alternatively, you can transfer the apple mixture in batches to a regular blender.

              Final Cooking: After blending, return the apple butter to the slow cooker and cook uncovered on low for an additional 1-2 hours to thicken it further. Stir occasionally to avoid sticking, and cook until your preferred consistency is reached.

                Jar It Up: Once the apple butter is ready, let it cool slightly before transferring it to sterilized jars. Wipe the rims with a clean cloth before sealing.

                  Storage: Store the apple butter in the refrigerator for up to two weeks, or process in a water bath for longer shelf life.
