The origins of the Sloppy Joe date back to the early 20th century, with various claims to its invention. One popular story attributes it to a cook named Joe who worked at a cafe in Sioux City, Iowa. He created an open-faced sandwich using ground beef, tomato sauce, and spices, which quickly became a favorite among customers. The dish gained further popularity during the Great Depression, thanks to its affordability and ease of preparation.

Ingredients

1 pound ground beef or turkey

1 medium onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup ketchup

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 teaspoon mustard (yellow or Dijon, your choice)

1 (15 oz) can kidney beans, drained and rinsed

1 (15 oz) can corn, drained

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

1 package of refrigerated crescent roll dough

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh parsley, chopped for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook the Meat: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef or turkey. Cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess fat.

Sauté Aromatics: Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook until the onion is translucent, about 5 minutes.

Mix in Sauce: Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, drained kidney beans, and corn. Season with salt and pepper. Simmer for about 5 minutes to allow flavors to meld.

Layer the Casserole: In a greased 9x13-inch casserole dish, spread half of the crescent roll dough at the bottom, pinching seams together to form a cohesive layer.

Add the Meat Mixture: Pour the sloppy joe mixture over the crescent roll layer and spread evenly. Top the mixture with shredded cheddar cheese.

Top with Remaining Dough: Take the remaining crescent roll dough and layer it over the cheese, pinching together to seal any gaps.

Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 25-30 minutes, or until the crescent roll topping is golden brown and cooked through.

Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool for about 5-10 minutes. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired before slicing and serving.

Prep Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 45 minutes | Servings: 6-8 servings
