Instructions

Prepare the Base:

    - Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.

      - In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.

        - Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

          - In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.

            - Spread the dough evenly into the prepared baking pan and bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until lightly golden and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let it cool while you prepare the caramel.

              Make the Salted Caramel:

                - In a medium saucepan over medium heat, add the granulated sugar and let it melt, stirring occasionally. Once it turns a golden brown color, carefully add the butter and stir until melted.

                  - Slowly pour in the heavy cream (the mixture will bubble up) and stir until smooth. Remove from heat and stir in the sea salt. Allow it to cool slightly.

                    Assemble the Bars:

                      - Pour the warm salted caramel over the cooled butter base, spreading it evenly. Let it set while you prepare the topping.

                        Prepare the Topping:

                          - In a small bowl, mix together the flour, powdered sugar, cocoa powder (if using), melted butter, and sea salt until crumbly. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the salted caramel layer.

                            Bake:

                              - Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the topping is set. Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan.

                                Serve:

                                  - Once cooled, cut into squares. Drizzle any remaining salted caramel sauce over the top and sprinkle with additional sea salt if desired. Enjoy these delectable bars with a cup of coffee or tea!
