Ingredients

1 loaf of brioche or challah bread, cut into 1-inch cubes

8 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1/2 cup heavy cream

1 cup granulated sugar

2 teaspoons cinnamon

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)

1 cup maple syrup (for drizzling)

Powdered sugar (for serving)

Instructions

Prepare the Bread: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cubed bread with sugar and spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt). Toss well to ensure the bread is evenly coated.

Mix the Custard: In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.

Combine Mixtures: Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes, gently folding it in. Ensure all the bread is soaked well. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, ideally overnight.

Preheat the Oven: The next morning, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Bake the Casserole: Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes. Transfer the mixture into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Bake for 40-50 minutes or until the top is golden brown and set in the center.

Serve: Let it cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm, drizzled with maple syrup and dusted with powdered sugar.
