1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

2 cups hot water

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For Serving:

Vanilla ice cream

Hot fudge sauce (from above)

Whipped cream

Chopped nuts (optional)

Maraschino cherries (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Cake Batter:

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round baking pan. In a mixing bowl, sift together the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, whisk together the milk, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and egg until well combined. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.

      Bake the Cake:

Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.

          Prepare the Fudge Sauce:

In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the brown sugar, cocoa powder, and hot water. Bring to a boil while stirring continuously to ensure the sugar dissolves. Once boiling, reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 5 minutes, then remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.

              Assemble the Sundae Cake:

Once the cake has cooled, cut it into slices. Place a slice of cake on a plate and generously drizzle hot fudge sauce over the top. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and drizzle more fudge sauce on top of the ice cream. Finish with a dollop of whipped cream, a sprinkle of chopped nuts, and a cherry on top if desired.

                  Serve:

Enjoy your Old-Fashioned Hot Fudge Sundae Cake immediately, allowing each element to blend together with each delicious bite!
