No-Oven Stovetop Bread

A delightful twist on a classic dish.

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup warm water (about 110°F/43°C)

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 tablespoon sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon instant yeast

Optional: herbs (rosemary, thyme) or seeds (sesame, poppy) for flavoring

Instructions

In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and instant yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.

Add olive oil, salt, and half of the flour to the mix. Stir until a batter forms.

Gradually add the remaining flour, mixing until a soft dough forms. If it’s too sticky, sprinkle a little more flour as needed.

Lightly flour a clean surface and knead the dough for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly greased bowl. Cover it with a kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for 30 minutes, or until it has doubled in size.

Punch down the risen dough and shape it into a round or oval loaf. Optionally, sprinkle herbs or seeds on top before placing it into a lightly greased skillet.

Cover the skillet with a lid. Cook over low heat for 20-25 minutes, checking occasionally to prevent burning. The bread is ready when it sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Once done, remove from the skillet and let it cool on a wire rack before slicing. Enjoy your fresh stovetop bread with butter, olive oil, or your favorite spread!
