Ingredients

3 ½ cups all-purpose flour

1 ½ teaspoons instant yeast

1 teaspoon sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)

2 tablespoons olive oil

4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Grated Parmesan cheese (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt. Mix well until the dry ingredients are combined.

Add Wet Ingredients: Slowly pour in the warm water and olive oil. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.

Knead the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Knead for about 7-10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. It should be soft but not sticky.

First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with a kitchen towel. Allow it to rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.

Shape the Knots: After the dough has risen, punch it down gently. Divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rope about 8 inches long and tie it into a knot. Place the knots on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Second Rise: Cover the knots with a towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes until they puff up slightly.

Preheat the Oven: While the knots are rising, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Make Garlic Herb Butter: In a small bowl, mix the melted butter, minced garlic, dried oregano, dried basil, and red pepper flakes (if using).

Bake the Knots: Once the knots have risen, brush them generously with the garlic herb butter. Reserve some for brushing after baking. Bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes or until golden brown.

Finish with Butter: Remove the knots from the oven, and while they are still hot, brush them with the remaining garlic herb butter.

Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle fresh parsley and grated Parmesan cheese over the knots while they are warm, and serve immediately.
