Ingredients

2 cans refrigerated crescent roll dough

1 lb ground Italian sausage (mild or spicy, based on preference)

1 medium onion, chopped

1 red bell pepper, diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes, drained

1 cup marinara sauce

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup ricotta cheese

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

In a large skillet, cook the ground sausage over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat, if necessary.

Add the chopped onion, diced red bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté until the vegetables are soft and the onions are translucent, about 5-7 minutes.

Stir in the drained diced tomatoes, marinara sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Let the mixture simmer for about 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

Meanwhile, unroll one can of crescent roll dough and lay it flat in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, pressing the seams together to create a solid base.

Spread half of the ricotta cheese over the crescent roll base. Top with the sausage and vegetable mixture, followed by half of the mozzarella cheese.

Unroll the second can of crescent roll dough and place it over the filling, pinching seams together to seal.

Spread the remaining ricotta cheese on top and sprinkle with the remaining mozzarella cheese.

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.

Let cool for a few minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired.
