Ingredients

12 lasagna noodles

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage

1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes

2 cans (6 oz each) tomato paste

2 tablespoons tomato sauce

1 tablespoon sugar

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 teaspoon dried oregano

½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon black pepper

2 cups ricotta cheese

1 egg

3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

¾ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook the Noodles: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

      Prepare the Meat Sauce:

        - In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 2-3 minutes until translucent.

          - Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

            - Add the ground beef (or sausage), breaking it apart with a spoon, and cook until browned. Drain excess fat.

              - Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, sugar, basil, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a gentle simmer and let it cook for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Prepare the Ricotta Mixture: In a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, and a pinch of salt. Mix until well combined.

                  Assemble the Lasagna:

                    - Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish.

                      - Place three noodles over the sauce; then spread a layer of the ricotta mixture, followed by a layer of mozzarella cheese, and then another layer of meat sauce.

                        - Repeat this layering process (noodles, ricotta, mozzarella, meat sauce) until all ingredients are used, ending with a final layer of meat sauce. Sprinkle remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on top.

Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil (to prevent sticking, spray the underside with cooking spray). Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes until golden and bubbly.

Cool and Serve: Let the lasagna cool for at least 15 minutes before cutting into squares. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired. Enjoy!
