Easy Homemade Buttery Soft Pretzels and Pretzel Bites

A delightful twist on a classic dish.

Ingredients

1 ½ cups warm water (110°F to 115°F)

1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast

1 tablespoon granulated sugar

4 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

½ cup unsalted butter, melted (plus extra for brushing)

½ cup baking soda

1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Coarse sea salt (for sprinkling)

Instructions

Activate Yeast: In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, active dry yeast, and granulated sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

Mix Dough: Add the flour, salt, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Stir with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms.

Knead Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.

First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Prepare Baking Soda Solution: In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a boil. Stir in the baking soda (it will bubble up).

Shape Pretzels: Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope (about 24 inches long) and shape it into a pretzel.

Boil Pretzels: Carefully drop each pretzel into the boiling baking soda solution for about 30 seconds, using a slotted spoon to remove them.

Egg Wash & Sprinkle: Place the boiled pretzels on the prepared baking sheets, brush them with the beaten egg, and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.

Cool & Serve: Once baked, brush with extra melted butter for a delightful sheen. Let cool slightly before serving warm. Enjoy with mustard or cheese sauce!
