Easy Baked French Toast Casserole Recipe

A delightful twist on a classic dish.

Ingredients

1 loaf of French bread (day-old is preferred)

6 large eggs

2 cups milk (whole or 2%)

1/4 cup granulated sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup maple syrup (plus extra for serving)

1/2 cup butter (melted)

1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Fresh berries for topping (strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.

Prepare the Bread: Cut the loaf of French bread into 1-inch cubes. You should have around 8-10 cups of bread cubes. Place the bread cubes in an even layer in the prepared baking dish.

Make the Custard: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and salt until fully combined.

Combine: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes in the baking dish. Use a spatula to gently press the bread down to ensure all pieces are soaked.

Add Toppings: Drizzle the melted butter over the top of the bread mixture, then sprinkle with chopped pecans or walnuts if desired.

Chill (Optional): For a richer flavor, cover the dish with plastic wrap and let it sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes (or up to overnight) to absorb the custard.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 35-45 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.

Serve: Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm with maple syrup and fresh berries on top.
