1 cup packed brown sugar

4 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon baking soda

¼ teaspoon salt

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

For the frosting:

½ cup unsalted butter (1 stick), softened

2 cups powdered sugar

¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

3 tablespoons milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For decoration:

Mini marshmallows

Chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan with butter or cooking spray and set aside.

    Make the cake batter:

      - In a large mixing bowl, melt 1 cup of butter in the microwave or over low heat.

        - Add granulated sugar and brown sugar to the melted butter, and mix until well combined.

          - Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

            - In another bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture into the butter-sugar mixture, stirring until just combined.

              - Fold in the chocolate chips until evenly distributed.

                Bake the cake:

                  - Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.

                    - Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack.

                      Prepare the frosting:

                        - In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing until well-blended.

                          - Add the milk and vanilla extract, and beat until the frosting is smooth and spreadable.

                            Assemble the cake:

                              - Once the cake is completely cool, evenly spread the frosting over the top.

                                - While the frosting is still soft, sprinkle mini marshmallows and chopped nuts (if using) over the frosting for a delicious topping.

                                  Serve and enjoy:

                                    - Cut into squares and serve at room temperature. This cake is even better the next day as the flavors meld together!
