Country-Style Sausage Gravy Skillet

A delightful twist on a classic dish.

Ingredients

1 pound country-style sausage (bulk or links, casings removed)

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

2 cups whole milk (or half-and-half for richer gravy)

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon black pepper (to taste)

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for a kick)

Salt to taste

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon olive oil (if needed)

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Biscuits or toast (for serving)

Instructions

Cook the Sausage: In a large skillet, over medium heat, add the country-style sausage. Break it up with a spatula and cook until browned and fully cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Make sure to render some of the fat. If there’s too much grease, you can drain excess, leaving about 1 tablespoon in the skillet.

Make the Roux: Sprinkle the flour over the browned sausage and mix well to create a roux. Cook for about 1-2 minutes, stirring frequently, until the flour is lightly golden.

Add the Milk: Gradually whisk in the whole milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Stir until combined.

Season the Gravy: Add garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, cayenne pepper (if using), and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring constantly. Cook for about 5-10 minutes, or until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as necessary.

Serve: Spoon the gravy over warm biscuits or toast and garnish with freshly chopped parsley. Enjoy your hearty meal!
