Instructions

Preheat Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

Beat Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy (about 4-5 minutes).

Add Eggs & Vanilla: Add the eggs one by one, mixing well after each addition. Then, mix in the vanilla extract.

Alternate Mixing Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined; do not overmix.

Bake the Cake: Divide the batter evenly among the three prepared pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Cool the Cakes: Once baked, remove the cakes from the oven and allow them to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Make the Caramel Frosting: In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the brown sugar and butter. Stir until melted and bubbly, then add the heavy cream and continue to simmer for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Let the frosting cool to a spreadable consistency.

Assemble the Cake: Once the cakes are completely cooled, place one layer on a serving platter. Spread a layer of caramel frosting on top. Place the second cake layer on top and repeat the frosting process. Top with the final cake layer and frost the top and sides of the entire cake.

Garnish: If desired, sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts on the top for an extra crunch.

Serve: Slice the cake and serve it at room temperature. Enjoy the rich, buttery flavor with the sweet caramel frosting.
