Ingredients

1 pound ground beef (80/20 lean to fat ratio)

1/2 cup breadcrumbs

1/4 cup milk

1 large egg

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 large onions, thinly sliced

2 cups beef broth

2 tablespoons soy sauce

1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons cold water (optional, for thickening)

Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined. Divide the mixture into four equal patties and shape them into round disks about 3/4 inch thick.

Cook the Patties: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties to the skillet and sear for about 4-5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties and set aside on a plate.

Cook the Onions: In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil. Add the sliced onions and sauté on medium heat for about 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally until caramelized and golden brown.

Make the Gravy: Once the onions are caramelized, pour in the beef broth and soy sauce. Stir to combine, scraping any brown bits from the bottom of the pan. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook for 5 minutes.

Thicken the Gravy (optional): If you desire a thicker gravy, stir in the cornstarch slurry (cornstarch mixed with water) into the skillet. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the gravy thickens.

Return the Patties: Gently return the hamburger patties to the skillet, spooning the gravy over the top. Let them simmer for an additional 2 minutes to heat through.

Serve: Carefully plate the hamburger steaks, topping with the savory onion gravy. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
