Ingredients

8 ounces elbow macaroni

4 tablespoons unsalted butter

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

4 cups whole milk

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon mustard powder

2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 teaspoon paprika (optional, for topping)

1/2 cup breadcrumbs (for topping)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Cook the Macaroni: In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Make the Cheese Sauce: In the same pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the flour to create a roux, cooking for about 1-2 minutes until bubbling and golden.

Add Milk: Gradually whisk in the whole milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue to cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a gentle simmer, about 5-7 minutes.

Season and Add Cheese: Stir in the garlic powder, onion powder, mustard powder, salt, and black pepper. Add the shredded sharp cheddar and mozzarella cheeses, stirring until melted and creamy.

Combine with Macaroni: Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce, mixing well to coat all the pasta evenly.

Prepare for Baking: Pour the macaroni and cheese mixture into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.

Make the Topping: In a small bowl, mix the breadcrumbs with paprika (if using) and a drizzle of melted butter for extra crunch. Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture evenly over the top of the mac and cheese.

Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbling.

Serve: Remove from the oven and let it sit for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your comforting, creamy baked mac and cheese!
