Understanding the history of pretzels adds depth to your baking experience. Pretzels have a fascinating history that dates back to ancient times. The earliest iterations of pretzels are believed to have originated in 610 A.D. by monks in Europe, who shaped leftover dough into the form of a person crossing their arms in prayer. Ingredients

1 can of refrigerated pizza dough (about 13.8 oz)

1/4 cup of unsalted butter, melted

1/3 cup of granulated sugar

2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon

Coarse sea salt, for sprinkling (optional)

1/2 cup of warm water (about 110°F)

1 teaspoon of baking soda

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Prepare the Dough: Roll out the pizza dough onto a lightly floured surface. Cut the dough into 1-inch squares or strips, about 1 inch wide.

Create the Baking Soda Bath: In a medium bowl, mix the warm water with baking soda until dissolved. This creates a solution that helps give the pretzel bites their classic texture.

Dip the Dough: Dip each piece of cut dough into the baking soda solution for about 30 seconds, ensuring they are fully submerged. Remove them and place them on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about an inch apart.

Bake the Pretzel Bites: Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, or until they are golden brown.

Prepare Cinnamon Sugar: While the pretzel bites are baking, mix the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon in a small bowl.

Coat the Pretzel Bites: As soon as the pretzel bites come out of the oven, brush them with the melted butter on all sides. Then, roll them in the cinnamon sugar mixture while they are still warm to ensure they adhere well.

Optional Sprinkle: If desired, sprinkle a pinch of coarse sea salt on top of the cinnamon-sugar coated pretzel bites for a sweet and salty flavor combination.

Serve and Enjoy: Allow the pretzel bites to cool slightly before serving. They are best enjoyed warm!
