Cheese & bacon strata cake

A delightful twist on a classic dish.

Ingredients

8 slices of day-old bread (white or sourdough)

6 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup cooked bacon, chopped

1 small onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1/2 teaspoon dried thyme

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

2 tablespoons butter (for greasing and sautéing)

Fresh parsley, for garnish

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan or a similar-sized baking dish with butter.

Prepare the Bread: Cut the day-old bread into cubes and set aside.

Cook the Bacon: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the chopped bacon until crispy. Remove and drain excess fat on a paper towel.

Sauté Vegetables: In the same skillet, add butter, diced onion, and minced garlic. Sauté until the onion is translucent, about 3–4 minutes.

Mix Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk. Add the shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheese, cooked bacon, sautéed onion and garlic, thyme, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine.

Combine Bread and Egg Mixture: Gently fold in the bread cubes, making sure they are well-coated with the egg mixture.

Bake the Strata: Pour the mixture into the prepared cake pan, spreading it evenly. Cover the pan with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until set and golden on top.

Cool and Serve: Allow the strata cake to cool for about 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve warm.
