A French toast bake is a delightful twist on the classic breakfast dish, combining the comforting flavors of French toast with the ease of an oven-baked casserole. This method allows you to prepare a large portion at once, making it ideal for breakfast or brunch gatherings where you want to impress your guests without spending hours in the kitchen. One particular variation that stands out is the Blueberry Croissant French Toast Bake, which elevates the traditional recipe by incorporating buttery croissants and juicy blueberries.

Blueberry Croissant French Toast Bake

A delightful twist on a classic dish.

Ingredients

5 large croissants, cut into large pieces

2 cups fresh blueberries (or frozen, thawed)

6 large eggs

1 cup whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup powdered sugar (for serving, optional)

Maple syrup (for serving, optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Prepare the Baking Dish: Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.

Layer the Croissants and Blueberries: Place the croissant pieces into the prepared baking dish. Spread the fresh blueberries evenly over the croissant layers.

Mix the Custard: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt until fully combined.

Pour the Custard: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the croissants and blueberries, ensuring all pieces are well soaked. Gently press down on the croissants to help them absorb the mixture.

Chill: Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or overnight if you want to prepare it in advance.

Bake: Remove the baking dish from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes. Then, bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes until golden brown and set. If the top starts to brown too quickly, cover it loosely with aluminum foil.

Cool and Serve: Allow to cool for 10 minutes before slicing. Dust with powdered sugar if desired, and serve warm with maple syrup on the side.
