Best French Toast Casserole

A delightful twist on a classic dish.

Ingredients

1 loaf of brioche or challah bread, cubed (about 10-12 cups)

6 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup maple syrup (for serving)

1/2 cup powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)

1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

1/2 cup fresh berries (optional for garnish)

Instructions

Prep the Bread: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray. Place the cubed bread evenly in the baking dish.

Make the Custard: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.

Combine: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing down slightly to ensure all the bread is soaked. If desired, sprinkle chopped nuts on top.

Chill: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight. This allows the bread to fully absorb the custard.

Bake: Once ready to bake, remove the casserole from the fridge and let it sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes. Uncover the casserole and bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.

Serve: Let the casserole cool for about 10 minutes before serving. Dust with powdered sugar if desired and drizzle with warm maple syrup. Garnish with fresh berries for an extra special touch.
