Ingredients

4 ripe heirloom tomatoes (assorted colors for visual appeal)

8 ounces fresh mozzarella (preferably buffalo mozzarella), sliced

1 cup fresh basil leaves

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar (aged for richer flavor)

Coarse sea salt, to taste

Freshly cracked black pepper, to taste

Instructions

Prepare the Ingredients: Start by washing the heirloom tomatoes and basil leaves under cool, running water. Pat the tomatoes dry with a paper towel.

Slice the Tomatoes: Using a sharp knife, slice the heirloom tomatoes into 1/4-inch thick slices. Aim for even cuts to keep the presentation neat.

Slice the Mozzarella: Cut the fresh mozzarella into rounds that are similar in size to the tomato slices, about 1/4-inch thick.

Layering the Salad: On a large serving platter or individual plates, begin layering the ingredients. Start with a slice of tomato, followed by a slice of mozzarella, and a basil leaf. Repeat the process, alternating between the tomato and mozzarella, adding a basil leaf between each layer until you have used all the ingredients.

Dress the Salad: Drizzle the extra-virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar over the top of the salad. Be generous, as these will enhance the flavors.

Season: Sprinkle coarse sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper over the salad to taste. This will elevate the sweetness of the tomatoes and the creaminess of the mozzarella.

Serve Immediately: For the best flavor experience, serve the salad immediately at room temperature. If you have leftovers, store them in the fridge but note that the basil may wilt.
