Ingredients

4 hot dogs (beef, pork, or vegetarian)

1 ½ cups warm water (110°F to 115°F)

2 tablespoons granulated sugar

1 tablespoon active dry yeast

4 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon baking soda

Coarse sea salt (for sprinkling)

1 egg (for egg wash)

Optional: Everything bagel seasoning or sesame seeds (for topping)

Instructions

Prepare the Dough: In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

Combine Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Create a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture. Stir until dough forms.

Knead the Dough: Lightly flour a clean surface and knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Prepare Hot Dogs: While the dough rises, you can prepare the hot dogs by wrapping them with paper towels and microwaving them for about 30 seconds to warm them slightly.

Shape Bagel Dogs: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 4 equal portions. Roll each piece into a long rope (about 12-14 inches). Wrap the dough around each hot dog, ensuring it is evenly covered, pinching the ends to seal.

Baking Soda Bath: In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a gentle boil. Add the baking soda (be careful, as it will bubble). Boil each wrapped hot dog for about 30 seconds, then remove with a slotted spoon and place on the parchment-lined baking sheet.

Egg Wash: In a small bowl, beat the egg. Brush each bagel dog with the egg wash, then sprinkle with coarse sea salt and any additional toppings like everything bagel seasoning or sesame seeds, if desired.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.

Serve: Allow bagel dogs to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them with your favorite condiments like mustard, ketchup, or relish!
