Ingredients

1 lb round steak or chuck steak, thinly sliced

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

2 tablespoons olive oil or vegetable oil

1 large onion, sliced

2 cups beef broth (homemade or store-bought)

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon paprika

1 cup mushrooms, sliced (optional)

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Prep the Steak: Tenderize the thinly sliced steak using a meat mallet if desired. This will help it absorb the flavors better.

Season the Flour: In a shallow dish, combine the flour, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.

Coat the Steak: Dredge each piece of steak in the seasoned flour, ensuring it is evenly coated. Shake off any excess flour.

Brown the Steak: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the olive oil. Once hot, add the coated steak pieces in batches, cooking until browned on both sides (about 3-4 minutes per side). Remove the steak and set aside.

Sauté the Onions: In the same skillet, add the sliced onions (and mushrooms if using). Sauté until they are softened and caramelized, about 5-7 minutes.

Make the Sauce: Pour the beef broth into the skillet, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and paprika. Bring to a simmer.

Combine and Simmer: Return the browned steak to the skillet, ensuring it is submerged in the liquid. Cover the skillet and let it simmer on low heat for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the steak is tender.

Serve: Once tender, taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Serve the Amish Poor Man's Steak over mashed potatoes or egg noodles, garnished with fresh parsley.
