Ingredients

4 large eggs

3 cups whole milk

1 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1/8 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (plus extra for garnish)

1 tablespoon butter (for greasing)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

In a large mixing bowl, crack the eggs and whisk until well beaten and frothy.

Gradually add the granulated sugar to the eggs while continuing to whisk until combined.

Slowly pour in the whole milk, whisking to combine all the wet ingredients.

Add the vanilla extract, salt, and ground nutmeg, whisking until the mixture is smooth and homogeneous.

Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray to prevent sticking.

Carefully pour the custard mixture into the prepared baking dish.

For a marbled effect, use a drinking straw or a knife to gently swirl the mixture if desired.

Place the baking dish in a larger pan filled with hot water, creating a water bath to ensure even cooking.

Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until the custard is set (a knife inserted in the center should come out clean).

Once baked, remove the custard from the oven and allow it to cool at room temperature for about 20 minutes.

If desired, sprinkle additional ground nutmeg on top before serving.

Cut into squares or scoop into bowls and serve warm or chill in the refrigerator for a cold treat.
